Hi All,

I have a Peugeot 206 GTi 2.0L registered in March 2000.

The problem I have is as follows:

On a cold start the engine (and to some extent the car) vibrant excessively and the rpm is on 1100 plus there is white smoke comimg from the exhaust. After letting the car idle for 5-7 minutes the rpms drop to 750 (Normal) and the engine shaking & exhaust smoke stop. After idling for 5 minutes or so she drives lovely with no problems whatsoever.

If I then leave the car for a hour or so she starts lovely, no smoke, no shaking and the rpms are on 750. Anything over 2-3 hours and we revert back to the problem of cold starting.

I have cleaned the Idle control valve & replaced the engine temperature sensor.

you have a cracked head gasket. doesn't sound like a big crack but enough that it is wetting your piston(s) down.that is causing the rough idle and smoke as the engine is trying to rid isself of the water. head gasket replacement is best but can be pricey depending on the shop and their level of integrity, but it will save your engine. in the meantime try a bottle of barrs leak. it goes in the radiator. if you have a small radiator cap/neck you may need to put the bottle into a small pot of boiling water to melt the chunks of sealant so it will go into the radiator smoothly. once in run the engine to operating temp and turn your heater to high and drive it aroud a bit to cirulate the material. when the material finds the leak it will seal it up. that should help till you can get a new head gasket put in.

I totally disagree with adding any type of sealant to your cooling system. You may or may not have a head gasket issue. Since you didn't mention coolant loss, I have my doubts. This could just as easily be a valve or compression issue for some other reason or even a fuel leakdown but you need to look into further before doing anything and sealer is not the answer, no matter what.
