I really need someone's help with this.

I recently took on my old man's car. It is:

A 2000 VW Golf Estate TDI 1.9. It's done around 230,000 miles.

I drove a very long journey in it recently and it was absolutely superb. The only issue was that the plastic covering under the engine had dropped (and had been like that for some time) and so when I went over bumps and dips in the road, it would scuff the ground.

Today the scuffing got worse, and I suspected this was not going to be something just to forget about.

I took it to a garage and the mechanic said that given the age, and given the problem (which I correctly identified) he would simply remove the casing and have done with it. A quick and easy job.

Then on the way home, I noticed a few issues.

Issue 1: When I accelerate, there is a hissing noise, that only comes when I press the accelerator down. I can't hear it when the windows are up, but when they are down a little it is quite obvious.

Issue 2: Prolonged accelation leads to a bit of black smoke coming from the rear of the car. I am told this is excess oil falling on the exhaust and burning off, but I am not 100%. Is this right and if so , is it a problem.

Issue 3: Most worrying of all - the performance doesn't seem quite right, or the same as it was before. There isn't quite the lift off I was used to in middling gears, but maybe I am being paranoid?

Can anyone please put my mind at ease, because this is really irritating me. Am I going to have to blow money I can ill afford?

thank you in advance.

Mr. P.

That shield is there to manage the airfow under the car and to prevent water , mud/snow from spraying on eng excessively and a bit of sound dampening . I have seen lots of cars ,including my own run around with no ill affects . I dont think it is the cause of your symtoms. As you stated , you are more aware of things now . Its either a dealer or salvage yard part . If you want tto fix it for peace of mind . Purchase one and next time car is on a lift ,brakes tires ,oil change ,etc, see if shop will reinstall it for a nominal fee.
