PLEASE HELP.... i cant seem to start my truck without spraying starter fluid in the throttle body... i have a 92 blazer t-10 vin w 4.3 vortec... once i shut it off she wont start again without it too. Theres also a tapping coming form the left passenger side valve cover but when i take the cover off to tighten the bolts they just come loose again and tap... The power loss iscrazy in first gear like she wants to stall almost... takes me awhile to get it up to 20 mph!!!

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

Have the fuel pump pressure tested; these things call for 54-64 psi; at 50 psi it likely won’t start on its own.
May also explain the lack of power?
As for the tapping; I d almost want to see it in person to comment.

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

92blazer; Agree with Dan. The tapping noise....you aren't tightening down the rocker arm bolts, are you? Those have a specific adjustment. Too tight can cause a loss of power, not to mention a burnt valve. Once you get this starting problem narrowed down (probably fuel pump....don't forget to replace the fuel filter, as well), you'll need to address the rocker arm adjustment immediately if that's what you've been 'tightening'.

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

Well i torqued them to the spec in my manual... 20 is what it said for the rocker arm. But the problem come to find out is that none of the push rods are staying tight when i try to spin them. So after days of trying to get them corrected me and my brother took off the upper and lower intake to see what the problem was. See the fuel pump was replaced not even a year ago and teh filter with it.... It seemed like everytime id tighten down those rocker arms teh engine sounded soooo much better!! but then after a couple seconds back to power loss and tapping... im thinking its a lifter but im not to sure what to look for... Like how the rod sits lower in the lifter then the others or wear? idk.... please i prob dug myself a lil deeper but from the looks of it it prob needed it..... can u tell me what to look for?? Heres some pics, and theres ALOT of sludge in the valley what can i use to clean that with?

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

Sorry, but can't tell from the picture, which engine you have. If it is a VIN W, then 20 ft. lbs. torque on the rocker arms is correct. If it is VIN Z, then it is the common, hydraulic lifter adjustment that Chevy has used for years. When the valves are closed, you should be able to turn the pushrods by hand. As the valves open, assuming that you don't have a weak lifter, I doubt that you'd be able to turn them by hand due to valve spring pressure. Again, if it's VIN Z, once you torque them, that's it. No further adjustment is needed, or should be possible? Is this TBI or MPI? (I'm thinking possible engine transplant?, not matching the VIN?)

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

yes this is vin W... And i used the 20 lbs torque as it says in the manual.. i went ahead and checked the lifters and it seems that piston 1 had so much sludge on top of the lifter i went ahead and replaced all of them and both sets of rockers and pushrods too.... the person who had the car before must have not taken good care of it its been tapping like that since ive had it (which i got for free so im not complaining)so i just finished putting the intake back on and im doin the plenum tommorrow and finishing up... hope this takes care of the problems i been having tho....

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

ok so i changed the lifters and put everything back together right... she wasnt starting and making a popping sound with smoke form the throttle body which i know is a timing issue... so i pulled spark #1 put a screw driver in there and hand cranked til the screw driver started moving, pulled the distributor shaft set it #1, put plug back in and when i went to start her there was a REALLY REALLY loud clank like metal hitting metal... idk what to do next as i dont wanna cause anymore damage after replacing those new parts... is this still a timing issue??

Re: PLEASE HELP Sign In

ok had the fuel pressure tested and its only 48 psi.... even tried the key on key off thing a couple times to prime and it says the same highest it went was 50 psi... fuel pressure reg? maybe the pump still? idk there is little gas puddles in the plenum but i been using starter fluid and gas to get her started... the other day she was running and just died on me a couple times she wont stay running while driving she will idle tho...
