Oil leak on 2010 Subaru Outback 2.0 premium Sign In

Hello! My partner is on the way to pick up a 2010 subaru outback 6 speed manual. the dealer gave us 1500$ off due to an issue (addressed here) and let us get it inspected. While in the test drive, we noticed smoke coming out of the hood. The dealer had no idea what was going on. Thus in the inspection by a subaru dealership, we were told the oil valve will have to be replaced, a bit over 100$ for the repair. I am afraid of a money pit, so does this repair seem like a reasonable cause for the leak? The smoke was coming towards the bottom of the engine, and it was clear that oil was leaking from somewhere though I do not personally know where from, all i could tell is it was somewhere towards the bottom of the engine. My partner in a rush to get me a new car, is not taking the time to get a second opinion. The outback has 117,000 miles on it if that helps any. Any idea of what else it may be caused from would be helpful. I know this is very vague but I am a bit stuck here.

You shouldn't buy it until they repair the issue. They shouldn't be selling you a vehicle with a major oil leak that could start a fire. You should also have your mechanic have a look at it before you buy it just so you know if your buying a problem or not. Tell your partner to slow down. There are millions of cars sold all the time, so take your time in choosing one.

We had another mechanic look at it, not the dealers mechanic. They confirmed it was an oil valve leak. I just hope thats the only issue. Apparently my partner already signed the papers for it...

does it make sense that it could possibly be an oil valve? I guess thats my main question. I dont want them to give me a diagnosis that might not even make sense.

The only oil valve i've heard of is an oil control valve for the VVT system. It is possible that oil could leak from that. There are two VTT oil control valves on that engine. The left one take around 30 mins to change and the right one is 2.5 hrs.

Very common problem on these vehicles, there's one in each cylinder head. They will drop as long as the motor is running. Replace, decrease engine and you should be good to go.
