Recently I have encountered several problems with my vehicles that require a scan tool, The shops in town charge $20-$30 just to plug it in. and then they will only tell me the code. If I want any more info from them they make ya schedule a appointment and charge what ever time it takes to pin point the problem. which I understand, they are a business, they are there to make money. Autozone does it free but they are over an hour away. So I am looking into buying one, but which one???? I would like it to diagnose OBD II and ABS. Any suggestions???

The best of that stuff is insanely expensive. If all you get is a code post the code # is azzholes don't tell you what it is directing to and take all with a grain of salt as a direction not the final diagnosis of what to replace! We can help. Post the #s and many techs here can suggest from there,

Yeah I see some of that stuff is 4-5 thousand. I'd be willing to spend 5-6 hundred.

What you get in that price range are readers that will display Federally mandated, generic information. There are 2 sides to every PCM and the factory specific stuff will still require professional software and equipment to access. The generic stuff will help you in most situations but there is lots of stuff that you will not be able to deal with. Most professional tools are "bidirectional" meaning they can "control" the computer in many ways for test certain systems which your generic tools cannot.
