Noises while 'coasting' (foot off gas and brake) - '99 Regal Sign In

Vehicle details:

Year of vehicle: 1999
Make of vehicle: Buick (GMC)
Model of vehicle: Regal
Engine size: Don't remember (V6? - pretty sure it has the turbocharger)
Mileage/Kilometer: 80,000-ish (78K to 79K)

I just had an oil change and tire rotation done on this vehicle at the dealer here about four days ago. I also had a tail light out or I would have taken it elsewhere for the simple stuff (although the dealer now has an oil change price that is hard to beat). I'm thinking they somehow screwed up the tire rotation but it could be entirely unrelated (e.g. a timing issue). Wanted to run this by someone more intelligent about cars than I am before taking it in.

Details on the problem:

While getting up to speed (foot on gas) and braking normally (foot on brake), there is no noise. When I am coasting (foot is off both gas and brake), I can hear a repeating noise that slowly builds. It gets rather loud around 20 to 25 MPH. If I put my foot on the brake, the noise stops almost immediately. If I accelerate, same thing.

Possibly related: About 3-4 months ago, I was driving on the highway (65 MPH) when what I believe to be an engine seizure happened. I was thrown forward rather suddenly and scared the crap out of me
(my seat belt stopped me from eating steering wheel). Nothing like it has happened since. The noises only started a couple days ago though.

Also possibly related: I keep an eye on the RPMs and generally know where the usual levels are. When I'm sitting at a stop light, the engine generally idles around 1000 RPM. Right now it is idling around 900 RPM and overall RPMs are lower at speed, which is why I'm thinking it could be a timing issue.

Yikes! That is weird with the highway thing. I can't think of anything for that one that would stop doing that for so long now??

This noise while NOT using gas or brake could be (can only guess as stuff like that) tire rotation may have exacerbated already uneven tire wear and it's noisier where they are now.

Not so common but can happen is one or more wheels were left loose! Gotta rule that out right away.

Idle may have been because they reset computer for some reason. Was a check or service engine light on? Idle, timing and a whole lot of controls aren't adjustable but computer does keep it stable as to not stall. 1,000 seems a bit high to me for normal - not sure how much I trust car's own gauge though either on that.

Do check that wheels are not loose as this seems to have happened instantly when tires/wheels were off to rotate them,

I would quickly double check your lug nuts for proper torque. A loose wheel will act like that too.
Also check that the brake calipers haven't come loose and are hitting in the inside of one of the wheels.

Stopped off at Discount Tire this morning and they found a "minor" balancing issue and rebalanced the tires and inflated them properly. The noise appears to be gone now. They noted a few possible other (minor) problems based on the tread wear that I'll get checked out at my next oil change. Unless the noise comes back before then.

For the highway thing - I just threw it out there in case it was potentially relevant and it only happened one time.

Glad you had this checked out again and that it's better or ok now.

Note - and we all can forget that no matter what type or devices a vehicle has for going down the road, steering, stopping - all of that, the only things that touches the road (unless something's really messed up) are the tires!

_______________

That highway thing is just an unknown to me anyway and would have to check a bazillion things and probably find nothing now in that it isn't doing that regularly and may never again??Crazy
