It's been well taken care of and generally starts first try. Occasionally, I go to start it and the starter just spins, motor turns but nothing happens. The battery is relatively new and there is nothing to indicate that the starter is failing to do its job. I am new to car repair but am very keen to learn how to do this stuff and would prefer not to take this to the garage. Happy to answer any clarifying questions! By description you need a "STARTER DRIVE" which with a look can be done on a good starter or whole rebuilt starter. This also could be teeth missing badly from the flywheel. If a standard shift those if so put in say 2nd gear and push the car just a few inches till engine turns and it should start. If automatic trans that "flywheel" is called a ring gear and either if the problem require removal of the transmission. Sample pic of what a starter drive looks like......... Idea is it will freespin if you engage starter while engine is running and grab the opposite direction firmly. Most failed ones begin as intermittent with "hmmmmm" sound of just starter but not turning the engine then quit for good and just hummm. Not always that easy to do just these without some practice and may cost more than a rebuilt starter? As far as the model goes, I did have to root around until I found what I think it is - Nissan didn't put any badges on it :( Anyway, yes it is a manual and I am up for the challenge/learning opportunity. You think it might be better to replace the whole starter? Datsun was the original name that became Nissan only. YOU must be sure it's really anything to do with the starter as well! I'm guessing based on what you said and described. So. If not sure have a mechanic diagnose the problem could be in seconds? Easiest and fastest if declared a problem with the starter is a whole starter. I mentioned a part of a starter the rebuilding shops would do that most people don't deal with directly or even know that those are parts THEY buy but many people do not or not aware of it.
