Need to decide which to fix and which to sell. Sign In

Hi, I have two cars that are currently not running. I need to get one running and I need to sell the other and I need to decide which I’m going to sell and which I’m going to keep. Normally my husband would be involved in this but he got Covid and is now all messed up and permanently in a nursing home so I’m on my own with this.

The first car is a 2005 Volkswagen beetle TDI with the diesel engine. It has about 85,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new and the only problem I’ve had with it is a glow plugs sensor light kept coming on. The first time it was replaced under warranty. The second time I had to pay for it and the mechanic at the VW dealer somehow dropped something into the engine and they said they had to do an engine job because of it. The third time the light came on I stopped using it and started using my father-in-law‘s 2006 Ford Mustang, the most basic model. The VW sat in my driveway which is in the woods, and unfortunately we had a tornado come through and a tree came down and smashed the back trunk lid. It also broke the front windshield. The car also needs a muffler, and a friend of mine has said that because it sat for about 10 years the brake lines are probably shot.

The mustang I was using from about 2012 to about six months ago when I bought a 2011 Honda CRV. The car was OK but I truly think my father-in-law put a curse on it because all these little things continually went wrong with it. The major things wrong with it include the body which is pretty badly banged up because it too was a victim of the tornado. Also when you floor it, it seems the entire electrical system shut down. The blower motor stops, the radio goes off, all The lights on the dash go off and it makes a screeching sound. When you take your foot off the gas it goes back to normal. I took it to Ford and they couldn’t figure it out. It had to be either the act of accelerating or when the transmission up shifts. Other problems include no driver side seatbelt, which I’ve gotten a price of almost $1000 to fix, and the driver side side window it’s gone. It also it’s going to need a windshield because there’s a crack going down the passenger side.

The engines and both cars run pretty strong with no known problems

Which would you fix and which would you sell?

So sorry about the medical problems mentioned it's only work and $ to fix up cars.
Onward I'll suggest you hire a tech to check what you have with what YOU know about it to see in person the damage or any rust issues exhaust systems last longer but not left sitting so well.
Broken trunk lid and windshield could mean water is getting in. YOU WILL NOT FIX ALL THE DAMAGE THAT WILL CAUSE! You also would have endless surprises if so also.
Perhaps group them all up to acquire another that suit just what you want and can do what you need it to meaning all those in trade used cars in assorted shape are fetching higher than normal trade prices so is one you'll buy that LACKS this tornado damage problem also. That's a serious bummer,

Tom

I never realized Connecticut was such a high tornado state. In fact I've never heard of one hitting there.

Twas last Fall HT - hundreds of small ones made a leaf storm in areas, other areas damage or harsh rains and then cape and islands got a hit. Fast and not Kansas style spotty damage or strange things. To include CT, RI and MA.

There are NOT rare they ARE usually inconsequential though, Tom
