Year: 1999
Make: Toyota
Model: Camry
Engine: 4 cyl
About 105,000 miles on it.

Well, I have a 1999 Toyota Camry and I am having a very weird problem with it. It happens only once, either every month or every other month. While I am driving the engine just turns off. The car shakes sometimes violently. Also it only turns off when I am slowing down or applying the brakes. While I am braking, the car starts shaking. The problem only happens for a brief period and then just goes away. I have noticed that for some reason it occurs more often in the winter time and less often in the summer. I doubt if the weather has anything to do with it. But the problem has been happening for about a year. I have taken it to 3 different repair shops, they test the car out and also hook it up to their diagnostic machine and the result always come back as clear. The mechanics always say that they do not see any problems with the car and it's running smoothly.

Last time it happened was about a week ago. I was driving to work and as I was slowing down to take an exit the engine turned off. The brakes became very stiff, I had to push them really hard for the car to stop. I tried to turn the car back on and it did not start the first few times. Once it did start I could feel that the car was not running smoothly. I parked the car at my job and during lunch I went to test it out. When I started it, the problem was gone. Like I said before it only occurs for a brief period and then goes away, so I can't really take it to mechanic when it is happening. I really need help please. The car doesn't have too many miles on it and it runs great when the problem is not happening. I really take care of the car and it should atleast last me up to a 150,000 miles. I do not want to get rid of it, please someone help. sorry for the long post I just wanted to add as much details as possible. Thank you.

ferno; A couple of possibilities come to mind; The EGR valve opens at cruise speeds. If it does not close when you come down to an idle, it can cause the engine to run very rough and/or die. Secondary ignition; Spark plug wires. In the winter months, there is much more humidity, even rain where I live...and a lot of it. Unsure The last thing that I can think of, would be a faulty coolant temp sensor, or the engine may not be reaching normal operating temperature. Hope this helps, but.....just some thoughts.
