Need help replacing alternator in a DIESEL chevy g30 (1984) Sign In

Hello everyone I'm new here. I'm also fairly new to the world of auto mechanics, but I'm learning all that I can.

So, my Chevy G30 RV has been having trouble starting, I jumped it a couple of times but it kept dying. Finally had AAA out and the guy tested the alternator and told me it was bad. I decided to try replacing it myself, which I heard wouldn't be too difficult.

I'm running into some stumbling blocks and I'm hoping you folks can help me get through it. Smile

Firstly, the alternator is deep down there and it seems I need to remove to fan shroud to access it. I removed the 6 bolts holding the shroud in place, but I still can't see to get it out. I'm not sure if I have to remove the entire radiator (I hope not), or perhaps disconnect some hoses. I can take a picture if that will help. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

UPDATE: I realized that the shroud is in two pieces and I separated them. There is still some hose blocking the removal of the upper shroud and I don't want to remove it until I know how. I'm not sure if this contains fuel or what. Please see this image and help me identify the hose I outlined. What is the procedure for removing this?

That link didn't get me anywhere but a search. Try photobucket. Have you tried to see where the line leads to?

A G30 engine bay isn't much fun. Yours is actually a lot nicer for space than the new ones, trust me. Welcome to the fun of turning a wrench.

Try the pic through photobucket. I'd like to see this line as you never know what the RV builders did with it and there is no service infor for a custom builder.

That is the AC line. Your shroud should be 2 piece. If it is, you can get that shroud out without removing the hose. The hoae is under pressure so don't just remove it.

Thanks guys. I managed to get the shroud off and removed the alternator, but the electrical cables are still attached. Now I'm trying to figure out how to remove them. Here's a picture:

The one with the plastic piece, I'm not sure to pull it in the direction of the wires, or up. It seems stuck. Then the other one is wrapped in rubber? My guess is I need to remove that rubber to see how to disconnect it.

The wires plug in from the side of the alternator. It looks like you broke open the connector. The should be a clip to press down on from the rear direction and then the plug will pull right out.
