Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

I have a 97 plymoth voyager It normally starts as soon as you turn the key. This morning it turned a couple of times and started and drove normal. Then 2nd time I left this morning it turned like 6 times then started. The 3rd time I went to go somewere this morning it turned a bunch of times then finally started I made it down the road and it stalled then wouldn't start. after like 15 min it started again and I made it back home. Now it won't start at all I pulled the fuel line and it has gas going threw. I took out the air box and when I tried to start it again smoke did come out I pulled a plug and it showed a little spark. I do know the plugs need to be replaced. Any ideas?

Will it start if you give it a couple squirts of starting fluid?

If it won't start on spray, that leaves either the ignition system or you have a mechanical problem with the engine itself.

Did you test for spark using a spark tester? Connect your tester to the coil wire and check for a strong fat blue spark. Then check for those fat blue sparks on your plug wires. If you have a nice blue spark in and out of the distributor, your going to have to check your compression.

I don't have a tester I pulled a plug and put it up to metal and turned the key it did show a little spark. Also when you try and start smoke does come out of the intake (not alot)

A little spark? Was it fat, strong, and blue? What do the plugs look like? Are the plugs wet with fuel? Did you check for spark on the rest of the cylinders too?

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

It was a little blue spark not big or fat. No I only tried the one plug. Because there was smoke doesn't that mean the fuel was burning so spark?

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

Its possible that it might be flooded if your plugs are wet with gas, but you should check for spark on the rest of the cylinders. If the plugs are worn out, you should give it a tune up. That includes wires, cap, and rotor too. If the cylinders are flooded, you can hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank on it. Holding the throttle fully open will cause the engine computer to go into clear flood mode. Clear flood means the computer doesn't pulse the injectors, but will fire the ignition system. That will clear the cylinders out.

A friend was thinking it just needs new cap, plugs and rotor could that be all that it needs? Does that make scense to you? I just can't put the 50.00 out for that if that's not it. Also Thanks for the help!

If you have spark to all your cylinders and won't start or pop on spray, that leaves a compression issue or some type of timing issue.

You should test your compression if you verify spark to all cylinders.

You might not be driving it to work today.

It wouldn't hurt to tune it up if all that stuff is worn out, but you might want to make sure that your compression is good.

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

If it is popping or trying to start, that means you might be only firing on a couple of cylinders. Is it popping or trying to start without using the spray?

If it is popping or trying to start only when you spray it, your going to have to check the fuel pressure with a gauge to eliminate a fuel pressure/volume issue.

You should check for spark on the rest of those cylinders. You should still run a compression check to eliminate a possible mechanical problem.

When it was running, did it misfire, buck, or run rough?

it was still popping with the spray or without. once it was running it ran and sounded normal

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

If it is popping without spray, check for spark on the rest of the wires. Inspect the wires for chaffing, spark leaks, burn't insulation. Also inspect the boots and be sure the terminals in the wires aren't corroded. You can measure the wires resistance with an ohm meter. General rule is a max of 10,000 ohm per foot. Anything higher and the wires have too much resistance. Wires do wear out, so if they are really old and your plugs are worn out, it is a good idea to replace them along with the plugs.

Pull the plugs out and check their condition. It still wouldn't be a bad idea to run a compression check on it. If compression looks good, you might as well tune it up and then go from there.

You should run a compression check.

What did the rest of the plugs look like?

all looked the same brownish and needs to be changed. Do you think the tune up would be the best place to start? I don't have anything to check the comp

Well, if you have a low or no compression problem, changing those ignition components won't solve the problem.

If you don't know what the compression is and changing those ignition items gets it running, you should drive to the nearest casino and place some bets..lol.

lol But if it was a compression problem would it have started and ran normal?

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

In the past if it started and ran normal it would be unlikely to be a compression problem.

But right now or currently you can't even get it to start or run, so you have to check fuel, ignition, and compression to see if they are there. It's best to figure out what is missing before replacing anything.

You need four things:

You need fuel pressure or fuel. That includes the injectors to be spraying fuel. Normally if the injectors are not spraying or there isn't fuel pressure, but everything else is working, you can get the engine to run or start by spraying it with starting fluid or even propane. If it runs while your spraying that stuff, but shuts off when you stop spraying you have a fueling issue. Be careful what you spray. Somethings don't burn too well. Don't use gasoline because if the engine backfires out the intake, you might become a flaming ball of fire running across the front yard.

If spraying it doesn't get it to run, you have an ignition or compression issue. You verified you had spark to your plugs.

You obviously need compression for the fuel and air to ignite in the combustion chamber. Without compression it would be like trying to fart in a tin can with a hole in the bottom of it.

The last thing is a timing problem. If it is a timing problem that either means you have an ignition timing problem or a valve timing problem. Both are usually related to compression if you have low compression because the camshaft aren't timed with the crankshaft for some reason.

Re: Need fast help! PLEASE I GOT TO GET TO WORK Sign In

Thanks for your help!

I took some time off work to get this done. I'm going to get the compression check gauge and the tune up parts cap, rotor, plugs, wires and hope for the best. I'll let you know how it works out
