I drive a 2002 Ford Focus, engine 2.0 I believe, with about 330,000 mi on it. I do not have the car in front of me (its towed to a friends house) so I do not know exactly how many miles or what engine. About a week ago my transmission light came on and it started having trouble accelerating passed 30 mph (which is about 3rd gear i believe?) ..i took it to auto zone and had them run a system check on it and they said my Colenoid A was out. From there I took it to my "usual" mechanic since living in this city (who i think is taking advantage of the fact that I know nothing about cars and I am alone in the city and charged me 1700 in bullSh!t last november) and he told me I need to rebuild my transmission for $4,000. Said it would be safe to drive on for a couple of days. And it was, for exactly that. It died WHILE I WAS IN DRIVE on the feeder road in traffic. My headlights were still on, so i could tell it wasnt electrical. I shuddered to a slow stop and died. I restarted it, and it barely made it into a gas station. Wouldn't accelerate. Tried reversing it into a parking spot and it would not budge. Put it in neutral and tried pushing and still would not budge. It would go in drive, BARELY, but not reverse. Also, when I shut off my car it would jump hard and make a clanking-ish noise. This is all the info I have. Any help would be amazing!!!!

Ive been told it was my "high drive" or something like that, ive been told it was my "axles" and ive been told i needed to rebuiled my transmission. none seem correct.

You went back to the same mechanic you allegedly ripped you off . You continued to drive a car with known serious problems. You have more than likely destroyed the trans beyond rebuilding . The only advise I can offer is to get car repaired at a reputable shop . You find one by checking with the BBB and checking references , look for certified mechanics And dont do this again . Dont drive until fixed.

i got ripped off all in one trip. yup 1700 worth of work. oh, and he told me i could drive on it and i made an appointment with a trans special(A REPUTABLE MECHANIC) for 2 days after that (i didnt plan on driving my car except for one of those days when i absolutely had to and thats when it broke down.) thanks for the advice though. i guess.

deex: Did you agree to $1,700 worth of work on this car? Unless a typo up top how many miles do you think a car can really go before not just engine and transmission but all the creature features of it hold up? 330,000 miles on this!
OMG - it's spent. Save your $$ for another if you liked this one and save in the long run is my suggestion,

A Focus with 330K on it? Wow, you just need to send that car to Guinness or just bury it.

If you can't push the car in neutral, did you check to see if the brakes are hanging up?
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yes agreed to the work because had no other choice at the time. The guy has always changed my oil and other things so i trusted him to fix it up but it broke down again. Yall don't understand I just moved to the city by myself and know no one here and am still paying on this car and its always been good to me. As of the past few months is when its started giving me serious problems. I asked for advice as to what might be wrong.with it because I don't know any reputable mechanics here or how to find them and all I'm.getting is ridicule and yall.are making me feel like I'm an idiot that doesn't take care of my car. Came here for help, left here with no information. Thanks for nothing guys.

Sorry it was not our intent to ridicule you . The best honest advise I can give with all the facts given. Is dont put any more hard earned money into this car . The amount you are looking at will get you a better used car with less wear.Good luck.

Re: Finding a shop in a new area.......... Ask new neighbors, co-workers or your motor club + if you don't have one I think they are a good idea.

Good luck but I'm with re-tired and other regulars here that you shouldn't put big bucks into a car with so many miles. Every last rivet on it has gone along for that ride and things happen,
