Mysterious noise coming from wheel, I think.... Sign In

1994 Toyota Paseo, 1.5L, 160,000 miles.

Alright, I will try to describe what is going on as best I can, but it is hard to describe sounds using words.

I have a '94 Toyota Paseo (FWD, manual transmission). Recently I have started hearing a "tsss" sound coming from my front wheels....I think. This sound is related to wheel spin, so for every 1 revolution of the wheel, I hear this "tsss" sound. It's hard to pinpoint where it's coming from, but I think it is coming from the driver side front wheel. Also, when I throw the clutch in, the sound will go away. Unfortunately I just put the car away for the winter, so I have all winter to worry about it. Obviously I can't get an accurate answer as to what it could be, but I'd appreciate it if you guys could throw some ideas my way.

At first I thought it was just a brake with a pebble stuck in it or something like that, but I think the fact that throwing the clutch in debunks that possibility. What I am worried is that it is the transmission. Just let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,
Joe

You pretty much answered your own question. There were a lot of possibilities but you eliminated most of them with the clutch symptom. It's going to have to be examined more closely.

That's what I figured. It's going to be on my mind the entire winter until I get a chance to look at it. Is it possible that it could be the transmission? I would think that if it was the transmission, it would make some sort of sound constantly as the car was moving....but in my case, it only happens every one revolution.

throw out bearing? ehhhh I don't know. I did some youtubing, and my sound doesn't sound like the throw out bearing problems on youtube. I should clear some things up- this sound only happens when the car is moving. And if I had to equate it to something, I would say it sounds more like a pebble stuck in the tread. It doesn't happen all the time, it is random at when the sound appears for the most part. The "tss tss tss tss" sound gets faster, the faster you drive....until you go fast enough where the wind/engine/exhaust overpowers the 'tss' sound.

appreciate the feedback so far.

I totally doubt throw-out bearing as it shouldn't be speed related at all but rather engine speed related.

Hard to say without some looking, testing. Guess I'd hoist car and see if it can be duplicated with wheels off ground. The tricky part of this noise is that clutch itself and vehicle/wheel speed?

Just perhaps and worth the look at the brakes and take calipers off for full inspection. Just wild guess that load from engine can torque on wheel rotation anything or anything that touches (brakes) rotating parts. Let the hunt begin.........

I doubt that.
