My wheels are rusted, car won't move, what is the best way to fix this? Sign In

My car was left to sit in the driveway for a week and now will not move. The wheels will not rotate and I can not go forward or backward. I have had this problem before, but the car was left sitting for months not days, and was more easily moved. I'm fairly certain all the wheels are rusted and will not turn. I only had a chance to jack up one tire and discover that it will not rotate, but by how it is behaving when I accelerate it seems that all are rusted stuck. I have tried to rock it back and forth in an attempt to break the corrosion but that hasn't worked. I don't want to do that any more in fear of breaking the car so I'd like to take a more delicate approach.

If I take off the tires what is a good method for unsticking the rotors or whatever they are called (I'm not very auto savvy but I can follow directions well)? Also, what can be done to remove the rust and prevent this from happening again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Bill

I think we could use a little more info on this one. What kind of car is it, any recent brake work done, emergency brake off, etc. It is highly unlikely brake rotors will rust up enough to lock the car in position after sitting only one week.

It's a 2002 Kia Rio, a real junker. There has been no recent brake work. The E-brake is not engaged. The pulling and releasing of the brake feels normal. It is manual transmission. The car is not driven often and when it is, it is for fairly short distances. Also, the weather here in Wisconsin has been very humid and rainy for the past 2 weeks.

It sounds like the Wisconsin winter salt and snow has taken it's toll on the brake system. Your just going to have to get the system inspected but your likely looking at new calipers, pads rotors and hoses.

I'm an unemployed college student that only uses this car during the summer when I am home. I don't have the money to throw at this car, and because it is quite the piece of garbage, I don't know if it would be worth it anyway. I'm looking for a do it yourself fix for this. If that's not possible I might just be out of luck.

You might be out of luck then because your brakes have some serious issues.

Well, I got them unstuck. Took off the tires and banged on them with a rubber mallet a bit. It's looking pretty rough in there. I'll be looking to see if I can replace the brakes before I do much driving with that car.

You haven't resolved anything. They are still going to overheat and lock up again.
