My 91 Ford Probe is messed up Sign In

I took my car (1991 Ford Probe, 4 cylinder 2.2 liter, automatic) to Jiffy Lube for a routine Oil Change, and since then it's died 3 times. The first time it died was later that day. I was sitting at a stoplight and it just died. After 20 minutes it randomly started again (It would turn over, but not start....then it wouldn't turn over at all, and then it just magically worked right before the tow truck got there). The second time was maybe 4 days later, it died while driving. It would turn over, and not start. Magically worked the next morning. The 3rd time, died while driving again, and would turn over but wouldn't start. Later that night, I got it to turn over and start...but then it died within 1-2 seconds. I started it again, died the same way. Started it again, but this time I started pushing on the gas and it stayed going till I got home (2 blocks away).

Jiffy Lube did overfill the oil by 1 quart, could this be causing the problem? Between the second and third times it died, I've replaced the Air Filter and cleaned out a birds nest that was under the battery cage. I let my brother use this car for years when I didn't have my license, and I don't think he did a single maintenance item on it....so it probably needs new sparkplugs and a tune up, could that be causing the problem? Thanks :)

it's possible because of the way you ran the car after it was overfilled that the crankshaft and connecting rods are damaged. check and see if the oil looks brown and bubbly. if this is the case, drain out all of the oil and replace it- also replace the filter. after 100ish miles, do this again. if that doesnt work id ask a mechanic to take a look. good luck

I know these cars are famous for ignition moduels.. they are part of the distributor and very expensive.. There is a guide on the internet on how to wire in a chevy model that you can pick up for around $40..

First thing you need to do is figure out why it's not running.
Check for spark and get a fuel pressure reading when it's acting up.

Any other ideas? It's just baffling me, because it will run for days without problem. Would the ignition module work, not work, work, not work like that? I'm used to things just breaking and not working at all lol

Most likely unrealated, but my brakes are grinding like crazy right now, was about to replace them......but I kinda want to make sure the car is working first. Bad brakes pads shouldn't be causing this right?

Ok, my car won't start at all now. It turned over, started working for about 1 second then died again. Now it only keeps turning over, won't actually start. Any further help would be appreciated :)

Re: My 91 Ford Probe is messed up Sign In

Here's where you start..........

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.
