Mercury Grand Marquis lock cylinder Sign In

I have a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis . The rod that slides the ignition switch is broken , so I got a steering column at the junk yard, but the ignition has no key.I bought a new ignition to put in , but the ignition in the column will not come out.

The car manual says it has to be in the RUN position to push in the pin, and pull the lock cylinder , and ignition out. I can't get it in the run position with no key.
What can I do ?

Will this junk yard swap that column with one with the key? I strongly suggest the exact one for the car WITH KEY(S) or might need help from a locksmith or bust the replacement or you are back to square one again,

None of the columns at the junk yard have keys. I will have to smash out the cylinder.

That is correct. It wil only release from the "ON" position. If you can't turn it on, then there will be drilling involved and I don't recommend you attempting that. The part you are looking for can be bought from the dealer for peanuts. I don't know why you are even messing with the used column.

My mechanic friend said the broken part which is the white plastic piece in the column is not available at the auto parts store. I paid $50 for the whole column.
What is the name of the part you are talking about? I have a new lock cylinder with key already.

Also . I went to the junk yard last month, and took a column out of the car, but it was not worth all the time, and trouble trying to get that part out of the column. It is alot easier to replace a lock cylinder then that long white piece.

Re: Mercury Grand Marquis lock cylinder Sign In

What I expect to change the cylinder is that when turned will expose a hardened bolt such that if someone used a dent puller to knock the whole thing out it would damage the column so don't do that.

I think Hammer Time is right on about drilling things out while not harming new/used parts. It's not meant to be easy for obvious reasons,

HI MR.Greenleaf

I got the cylinder out by drilling. Now I have to get one final piece out behind the green plate.I will try to pull it out with neddlenose pliers.

Just go easy with what works for you as you have an air bag to deal with and can be dangerous!

Re: Mercury Grand Marquis lock cylinder Sign In

What usually breaks is a piece of linkage connecting the key cylinder to the electrical switch below. It requires a lot of dissassembly to get to it but the dealer should have it in stock. It is "dealer only"

Re: Mercury Grand Marquis lock cylinder Sign In

You can easily remove the whole lock cylinder without taking anything apart but that won't help you get to the part I'm referring to. That would require total dis-assembly of the steering column.

I have removed the lock cylinder , but the tip is broken off in the ignition hosing. I guess I will drill hole in it , then screw tap into it to pull it out. Thanks

Re: Mercury Grand Marquis lock cylinder Sign In

I drilled out the old lock cylinder, and installed a new one, but their is a black hard round plastic ring with cooper coin in it that screws on the column. My old cylinder does not have that part. It was suppose to be installed with the new cylinder. Can I leave that part off?

I saw your picture. You definitely need that. That's you key sensor for the security system.

I don't want security .I just want to start my car with key.

That doesn't matter. It's not optional. The car has an immobilizer and unless it works, the car doesn't run.
