Malfunctionning Honda Passport EX auto '02

Hello,
I have an automatic 2002 Honda Passport EX. It had been fine until recently when it's getting too cold. When I start the car in the morning, the "check engine" light would be on. The indicator light (which allows me to see if I'm at Park, Reverse, or Drive, and so on..) on the dash board won't lit on or will stay in Park even though I shifted to Drive and am driving. On top of that, 1st to 2nd (or 2nd back to 1st when I step on the brake) gear doesn't shift smoothly. And when I stop and restart the car, check engine light is gone, indicator lights and gear shifting work properly like nothing ever happened. I really think there's an electrical malfunction somewhere due to the freezing temp.; because all goes back to normal when the weather is around 50 F. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance

Get a code reading as if the Check Engine Light was on it has information for you now that may help. Even though it may go out it doesn't forget for so many miles or cycles of warm ups which can take a week sometimes,

Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out soon. In the mean time, it's getting warmer now in Houston I'd also like to share an experience to those of us who owns a Passport (or an Isuzu alike). My Passport had a check engine light last year. I brought the suv to a Honda dealer, as well as many other car shops. Noone 'd be able to fix the code correctly. Ultimately I asked an auto parts guy, and prescribed 6 iridium laser NGK spark plugs. I tried to put them on myself and the check engine light is gone ever since. The plugs are 10 bucks a piece, but worth it.

If the CEL has been out or hasn't even blinked now for a while the codes stored will be gone. May take a week - hard to say but about 10 cycles of cold starts thru fully warm with all in order it will forget old info. If it's not running well it should have a code waiting.
Many parts stores and places read codes for free of course hoping to sell parts or work which is understandable. If the new plugs have solved it for now you may need to wait. BTW - I generally like OE specified spark plugs only in OBDII vehicles (96 and up) especially.
I've seen the displays showing certain plugs can increase mileage and power and don't buy it as if they really did the car maker would have already done it - trust me. In older (much) stuff I have seen different plugs last longer and tend to foul less.
Know this about codes: It's info to work with and not a complete diagnosis but can really help.
If all is well now I suggest just keep up with routine maintenance till you have an issue if it does it again as finding a non problem will likely be fruitless,
