Or the guy doing the work on my car did anyways. I brought my car to the college to get a bit of work done on it, the guys in the automotive department get to work on a car for some class project stuff, I get free labor. The car is up on the lift, and the work takes a bit longer than planned, so it was going to be left over night, fixed up the next morning. So my friend who's in automotive (He usually does the work on the car for me, but this time passed it off to his shop partner and friend) comes in and says 'They lost your keys'. So now I'm being told that my car is going to be towed, at my expense, and put in a lot, at my expense. If we don't find the keys, I'll supposedly have to buy a new cylinder and replace it, since Pontiac is out of business and I can't get a replacement key from any GMC dealership. And the guy doing the work claims he gave the keys to his professor, his professor calls bullSh!t. So what do I do? Do I sue the guy who worked on the car? Is there any way I can drive my car without replacing the cylinder?

You should be able to find a GM dealer thats handling pontiac work. Take the VIN# and proof of ownership and they should be able to make one. PLan B would be ....buy a new key cylinder (comes with 2 keys) and have them install for free. As far as legal action ,Im sure you had to sign a waiver when you brought car in ...........Not responsible for ...blah ,blah ,blah. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

Ok, you sue them for the $50 lock cylinder and then you pay them for the hundreds in free work they did for you. that sounds fair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Well, seems my car's previous owner changed the tumblers from the VIN one. So the current situation is that we removed one of the car door locks, brought it to the dealer. The dealer will cut us a key based on that lock, and we're buying a new steering column from a junkyard for 75 bucks (wheel, ignition, everything) since if we try to remove the ignition cylinder without the key, we have to drill it, and junk it. So looks like the total for the parts is going to be under 100 bucks. No big deal.

I hope they realize that it isn't going to start after changing the column until the security system has the relearn procedure.

If it was a "for profit" business, you would have slight grounds but not a school that is working on your car for free. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

well you're wrong about the Gm dealerships..any GM dealer can burn you a new set of keys for it if you bring them the vin code..(provided the locks have never been changed)sometimes you might need an id and the cars reg to prove you own it...good luck
