2000 jeep cherokee sport will not shift into park when its very cold out. For years I noticed it was a bit clunky shifting into park on realy cold days. This year below maybe 20degrees will not shift back into park. any ideas?

Do you mean the gear shifter doesn't go into park or do you mean the transmission itself isn't engaging the parking pawl, but the shifter goes into the park position? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

found the problem. The shifter button has to much play before it engages. Any way to adjust or do I need to get a new shifter. In The cold I can shift inti park if I manually pull the cable further. currently it only slightly pulls when fully depressed.

Sounds like you may have a bad bushing in the cable and the cable will have to be replaced. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

It seems as though the play is in the button as it does not engage until almost fully depressed and barely pulls the cable

The button doesn't pull any cables. It merely unlocks the shifter.

Maybe the shifter isn't unlocking all the way.
