Jeep wont go INTO park when its cold Sign In

2000 jeep cherokee sport will not shift into park when its very cold out. For years I noticed it was a bit clunky shifting into park on realy cold days. This year below maybe 20degrees will not shift back into park.

any ideas?

Do you mean the gear shifter doesn't go into park or do you mean the transmission itself isn't engaging the parking pawl, but the shifter goes into the park position?

found the problem. The shifter button has to much play before it engages. Any way to adjust or do I need to get a new shifter. In The cold I can shift inti park if I manually pull the cable further. currently it only slightly pulls when fully depressed.

Sounds like you may have a bad bushing in the cable and the cable will have to be replaced.

It seems as though the play is in the button as it does not engage until almost fully depressed and barely pulls the cable

The button doesn't pull any cables. It merely unlocks the shifter.

I see what your saying. However, If I found that if I use my fingertip to press the button slightly further in It will go into park. ??? I would think Either its unlocking or not. Why would depressing the button allow it out of park in the cold but not back in?

Maybe the shifter isn't unlocking all the way.
