2000
Jeep
Grand Cherokee Loredo
4.0 I6
186,000 miles
The past two days i have been having trouble getting my jeep to crank up and idle. The starter sounds like it is turning over rather slowly and I have to feather the gas pedal for it to crank up. Then i have to keep the RPM's up for about a minute before i can let off the gas and it stay running. Once i have done this it seemed to drive fine. It seemed to do this every time it sat for more than 2 hours or so. Today when leaving work it would not stay idling on it's own regardless of how long i kept the RPM's up. We also noticed a black liquid coming out of the exhaust pipe. My oil level and oil gauge seem to be at the normal level, which leaves me to believe it may just be gas bringing along all the sut from the exhaust. What should i check first to resolve this issue? I am working 12 hour shifts this weekend and have not had a chance to look at closely yet.

Check engine light on?

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to check fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge and also watch for fuel pressure bleed off. The gauge should be connected and read while the problem is occurring, of course.

Fuel pressure should be around 49 psi. The pump should be able to deliver around 1/4 L in 7 seconds.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
