Hey Guys, ive just been lookin at your site and decided to join. I've learned a few things already! Bought a 99 Jimmy a few months ago and heard thru the grapevine after i bought it that there was a problem with the heater coil, but ive never heard of a heater coil so i assumed it was the heater core. Then i noticed the smell of coolant comin into the cab even with the windows done up. Then came the overheating. So i tried givin it a flush myself by stickin the hose in the reservoir and lettin the excess come out the reservoir overflow, not much of a flush i know but it seemed to do something for a couple weeks. Then yesterday, the smell of coolant came back triplefold, the inside of the windshield started to fog up and i had a spike in the engine temp when i turned on the defrost. I turned off the defrost right away and the engine temp went back to normal immediately. I went out last night and with the cooler night air the inside of the windshield fogged almost completely and the stink is almost unbearable. I myself am not a mechanic and therefore would like some confirmation on what im thinking which at this point is that the heater core is the problem and i got hosed on this one. Thanks in advance to anybody that can help me out.

I'd say you hit the nail on the head. The heater core is leaking. You have two options. Bypass the core till you get it fixed or pull the dash and replace the core.
After you replace the core, flush out the coolant system real good. Then add 50/50 water/Dex-cool. Last check for excessive voltage in the coolant system. Heater cores can get eaten up by electrolysis or corrosion.
Don't be surprised if later you have to do the intake gaskets if they haven't already been done.

Awesome, thanks for info discrete, i appreciate it. I will try to find a haynes manual for this baby and see if i can accomplish this task myself. The guy i got it from was a mechanic and apparently, he knew this was gonna happen and didnt wanna deal with it so we will see how much i can do! For now one more question, in bypassing the heater core would i just clamp off both hoses? Would that do it? And by bypassing the heater core i guess that means i will have no heat and should correct the problem before the winter comes?!! Thanks again

Don't clamp the hoses. Just disconnect them and use a short piece of pipe and two hose clamps to connect them together.
You won't have heat when you do a bypass. Good luck

You can probably bypass this yourself but don't even attempt to change the core yourself. That is a major job on that truck.
