Impala dies when going under 10mph Sign In

2000
Chevrolet
Impala
Engine size 3.8
Mileage : 137000 miles

I was changing my oil with a friend and he had a connector for his computer to the car to see what the engine light was for. There was a problem with the MAF so we decided to try and clean it. Getting to the sensor was a lot harder than we thought we we just cleaned a very dirty grid filtering the air that was going into the engine. After doing this the error code was still there but some more problems arose.

When sitting in park the car sounds as if its about to die and then reves the engine to stay alive. This cycle just keeps repeating and alternates between ~700 rpms and ~1400 rpms.
If i'm standing with the brake applied in R or D the car starts shaking and dies pretty often. But if i'm in P or N it still does the strange rpm alternation but stays running and does not shake the car.

Also sometimes when I take my foot off of the accelerator at 30mph or so the car will start accelerating by itself.

Thanks for any help !!

Could possibly be an iac. Toothbrush (old & used) & a can of throttle body & injector cleaner. Engine off, intake snorkle off, spray into the throttle body and brush inside to clean up 130k miles of carbon deposits. A little hole by the iac needs attention also. iac is the idle air control valve. Let us know.

If the throttle body is coked up, then it would be a good idea to clean as suggested....

Exactly what code are you getting? What did you use to clean the MAF with? If you unplug the MAF & run the engine does it make a difference?

i kinda had a problem with achevy lumina that was like that.....the engine would rev in park at 3000 rpms and it peaked at 3000 rpms so it sounded like i was httin the gas over and over and over but wasnt....so we took this little black piece that has no label on that was hooked on the air intake im guessing, then the rev went to 700 rpms in park...however if i were to be driving and i stop it would die because it reved sooo low, it would even die when changing from reverse to drive...but i got rid of that piece of crap :)))
