Ignition Sticks When Key Turned to Start - '99 Taurus Sign In

'99 Ford Taurus 4dr Sedan; 6cyl; 115k

Hi,
My daughter's '99 Taurus 4Dr Sdn does this most times she starts it. When you put the key in the ignition and turn it to start, the ignition sticks momentarily. You must manually turn it slightly back to not grind the starter. The car starts up and runs fine except for this. On occasion, this "sticking" will reset the car's clock and the radio will be reset from FM to AM...(?)

I've shot it with WD40 but it's only a very short term fix.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Geez - I thought Ford had solved ignition crap by '99 but guess not. Stuff like that was common on some older ones. Trouble is that if it's the lock cylinder (probably) you really should send this out to someone qualified to go thru air bag to change that out - I'm near certain,

Thanks. Wondering specifically what you mean and + or - how much $$ to "send this out to someone qualified to go thru air bag to change that out".

I would guess less than a two hour job. The problem with advising on a web site about messing with air bags as you could get hurt if it deployed do this, it may not work properly when and if it's needed or go off. IMO - a little bit of money is worth it for trained and qualified help. It still should have the diagnosis verified that lock cylinder is causing this,

Thanks. I'll check with my mechanic Monday. The stickiness issue, I thought I could spray away. The resetting of clock and radio, not in my skillset.
Thanks again. Happy New Year.

If you can spray something and get this to work and last do it. Perhaps it can last?? Just please don't let a few bucks cause a safety issue over this,

Took it to my mechanic. He thought it might need to be replaced as you said. But, he wound up shooting powdered graphite into it. Works so far, knock on wood. We'll see how long it lasts.

Re: Ignition Sticks When Key Turned to Start - '99 Taurus Sign In

It might? Just don't let starter stay engaged once engine starts or this will get expensive. This Ford ign bull goes back quite a few years even much older than this car. Had a Taurus no less that key would come out of lock cylinder when really in accessory position which wasn't locking the wheel nor running still but could leave some accessories on.

Family dump runner car/wagon so I just notched and painted the true OFF position and any driver be ware of it.

Ford has had more than other ignition and shift locking problems since the 60s at least! I actually like Ford as a car maker and own several oldies.

Have VIN # ready and call to see if there's a recall on this. There are some recalls that they don't hunt down current owner of vehicles to notify and this could be one. No harm in checking. Been there with a GM something and fixed pre recall by me. Owner reimbursed anyway!
