I have a 2002 Toyota Celica GT with 105K miles on it that started having idle problems. The engine light went on so we brought it to the garage. They replaced the idle control and after about a week the problem came back. I was told that previous idle controller was faulty but that the engine was now making white smoke in the back and we needed a new head gasket because it overheated. He couldn't explain why we overheated except that maybe the thermostat was also defective and we just were unlucky. During repair he finally told me the head gasket was fine but now we still have to replace it and the smoke was oil being burnt not water.

In the end he replaced the thermostat, idle controller again (covered by Toyota warrantyWink), head gasket and machined the head, did the timing chain maintenance. Crazy

He then told me that he found oil in the exhaust manifold and thinks that the PCV valve caused that and all the other problem because it messed up the vacuum that is very strong. Now we also have a new PCV valve. I don't get how the PCV valve caused all the problems combined! Crazy

Its been about a month and a half and guess what! We are exactly where we started. The idle is not controlled well and the engine light is back on! I bet you its the idle controller code again! Mad

I think my friends are right. He never really figured out what was really wrong with the car.Unsure

So now I need to figure out was it wrong with it before I bring it to someone elseTongue. I did read somewhere that it might be the seals on the valves that are leaking into the exhaust manifold. This may explain part of the problem but why would it affect the idle controller?

Does anyone have any idea? Please???? Smile

What is the trouble code?

Is the white smoke still coming out the exhaust?

Timing chain maintenance on a Toy with 105K? Never seen that in the maintenance schedule. Was the chain noisy?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I have to run it to check for the white smoke. It's been parked for a few days now until we figure out what to do with it. I'll also get the code since I have a connector and iPad app to check the car codes.

When he went in to change the head gasket he found the chain guides were cracked so he replaced them.
