Idle keeps going up and down....... Sign In

I have a 1994 Ford Escort. When I start the car the idle goes up and down. The idle goes way down where the car sounds like it's going to stall, then it will come back up again to regular idle. It keeps doing this, up and down, up and down. Can someone help me out?

Start looking for some cheap and easy stuff like vacuum leaks, air cleaner housing being secure and for wires that may be damaged.

There are a lot of things that could cause this and not all will trigger a check engine light Start with that and see what you find, T

worse possible cause would be head gasket. had that happen to my tercel. i think the distributor might be too. especialy if its the older type which can be adjustable for timing. but yeah there can be alot of things.

I forgot to put in my first post, the idle only goes up and down when you first start the engine, a cold engine. Once the engine heats up, the idle will run smooth.

check the compression of all cylinders. you might have a leaking head gasket. it only happens when the engines cold. but once it warms up the metal expands and seals it off. it's just a small leak right now but give it time it will get bigger. also check the oil for antifreeze and the radiator for oil. the oil will apear grayish. thats water. if it is you need to check the head gasket. you might not see it right off but i'd keep an eye on it. let me know if this helps any.
