My car got stuck in park. A friend temp fixed it to allow me to get home by pushing the metal piece down beside the shifter inside the console. When I got home it won't turn all the way off so I can remove my key. It registers to my doors the car is in park because my doors unlock . But I don't know what to do or what part I need to fix this. Can anyone help.

There is a lock solenoid in the steering column that is likely bad but it and the wiring needs to be tested to be sure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ok thanks I'll get that checked out. Some other people have suggested maybe neutral safety switch, shifter cable, brake pedal censor, brake pedal position switch...

None of the above None of those things can prevent it from unlocking the steering column.

Do the brake lights work when you step on the pedal?

I wasn't aware that applying the brake was a requirement to turn the key off Brian. Is it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The steering wheel is not locked or hasn't locked since the problem started. And yes my brake lights works when I press the brake pedal.

No, the steering wheel won't lock if the key isn't turned all the way off so it you can't turn it off, it's not going to lock.

Yup.....everyone misreads a post now & then.... Well if you're doing this yourself, next step is going to be to get out you volt meter and check for voltage (or actually lack of it) at the solenoid when it's in park
