I Stripped Rocker bolt Grand prix 3.1 ! Feeling stupid Sign In

Hi guys, I need some advice.
I'm helping my SIL fix his blown head gasket on a 98 Grand Prix with the 3.1 six. I'm a bit over my head, but it's been going fine 'til today. I totally misread the manual and tightened the rocker bolt to 89 FOOT pounds instead of the required 89 INCH Pounds in the manual......stripping the threads clean out.
I went to autozone and they showed me the thread in restorers. Not sure what they're called, but they sure look flimsey to me. Coiled up springs basically.
The threaded hole in question, the first I tried, is quite accessable and easily tapped or whatever.

Will these inserts work on a rocker bolt? Seems like 89 inch isn't much, implying it should be alright. I'm just afraid it's not gonna hold the rocker down with all that motion.

I sure feel stupid.
Any input? Are there any other forums anyone can can recommend where I can ask this? I sure need advice bad. Do I need to go to the junkyard for another head? In that case how would I proceed on that? IE, should I use rhe rockers and rods I have now with the new head, assuming I can find and buy just the head?

They are called heli-coils and they will be very reliable if installed correctly. It's very important to use the exact size drill that the instructions call for, if it didn't supply one. The hole has to be perfectly straight and use the tap supplied. Apply some loctite to the outside of the heli-coil before installing it. Getting the drill and tap straight is the big thing.

PS, Try to get all the chips out before they fall into the motor and when you're putting it back together, remember the pushrods are different sizes so get them in the correct holes.

Thanks!
So the helicole has to have it's own tapped thread? I wouldn't have known that......I envisioned it as just sitting in the untapped hole, but that makes way more sense.

The hole is drilled a specific oversize and then tapped using a special tap. Then the coil is threaded in to restore the threads back to original size. Make sure you buy a complete kit with the drill, tap and coil installer all included.

Thanks very much again, that was very informative! Feeling a bit better, I definately have the skill set to repair my screwup. I just was freaking out that it would pull out. Seemed more like an anchor with nothing but friction holding it in. I just needed a schooling on how the heli-coil worked correctly. Makes more sense now. Thanks so much for your help. I'll post tomorrow to let you know how it goes.

Well.....I screwed it up. Anyone wanna buy an anchor? I got one angle right but frt to back ended up both off on the angle AND off center. I tried to go slow but of course the bit pulled to the left. Put the rocker on and it was clearly way wrong. Shoulda' found a machinist.

have a junk yard take off in hand. So 67.00 for the heli-coil kit and 75. for the used head. Hope it works.....
