2005, Chevy Malibu Maxx, ~83,000mi, 3.5L V6 Thank you for your help. The rear windshield wiper on our Malibu Maxx works when it is dry outside, but it does not work once it starts to rain. That is, it does not turn on and rotate if it is raining outside. No warning indicators are appearing in the car.

Do you hear the wiper motor running when the wiper arm stops moving? If so, the nut on the wiper arm may have loosened up. If the motor doesn't run, remove the wiper cover on the lift gate. Turn the wiper on and have someone use a spray bottle of water to spray around the wiper motor shaft. Look to see if there is water intrusion getting into the wiper module or motor. If so, the seal between the glass and the wiper shaft is probably leaking. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Once it rains again and our wiper fails, I check to see if I hear the motor running.

You can tell if the wiper arm is loose because you can move it back and forth with the wiper motor turned off. You could pull the cover and check for water intrusion. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I was able to rotate the blade approximately a half inch counter-clockwise from its resting position when turned off, but no further and not clockwise from its resting position. Do you think this would indicate a loose nut? I should also mention that my wife brought our car into the shop yesterday to address a number of issues, including the rear windshield wiper. They said that they weren't able to identify a problem with the wiper, but they also said that as part of their diagnostics they sprayed some water at the wiper and found some water intrusion, but they didn't seem to think that this was causing the problem, since the wiper continued to work. It suppose it may be possible that they resolved the problem incidentally yesterday (e.g. tightening the nut), but we've had them check the wiper twice before and the problem returned as usual when it rained. Since it hasn't rained, its hard to know whether this may be the case. In any event, I was able to slightly rotate the wiper tonight, as I mentioned above.
