Highway robbery? Brake problem. Sign In

My brother replaced all the brake pads on his 2000-something buick regal less than a week ago. I helped him change the rear brakes. I've replaced brake pads lots of times on my cars and never had any issues. He went out the other day and the car broke down just outside of a little town right next to a mechanic's shop. When I went to pick him up, I asked what happened. He couldn't really describe what it felt like or give much of a description of what it looked like, only that it was noticeable that there was something wrong when he first started out and got really bad when he got to the town. If I were a mechanic, a person who can't even describe what it felt like would have sucker written all over their face, especially if they were stranded from out of town. From what I gather from him after he talked to the mechanic, supposedly all the brake pads are worn out. Is there anything that would cause all the brake pads to wear out in less than 1000 miles besides bad pads or really worn rotors? I'm thinking of taking a trip to the mechanic myself, but don't want to make a stink if we actually might have done something wrong.

Without a straight story from the driver .How can anyone make any kind of reasoning. He seems to be out of touch with the world . You said he confused you with an attempt to describe the problem . Well put yourself in the mechanics shoes. It seems that they came to agreement to work on brakes. Was there a work order. Yes it is possible to wear brakes out that fast , worn mountings . improper assy, parking brake slightly on or misadjusted. Have a meeting with the mechanic without making accusations .If he does hot explain the repairs to your satisfaction or will not give you the time of day .THEN take legal recourse.

From my experience when someone works on a system that doesn't really know what they are doing, they can actually wind up doing more damage to the system that what was originally wrong with it to begin with and then due to their limited of knowledge of the system come to the only conclusion possible, that the technician/s have to be crooked.

Everyday I work on peoples cars who have limited or no knowledge of the systems being repair. Just because you can take advantage of someone doesn't mean you should Worty, that's just plain wrong & unethical no matter how you look at it, but thats just me (and everyone I work with and know) but apparently you would do business a little differently if "you were a mechanic" and that's unfortunate because the small minority of people that you would be like give the vast majority of people like us, meaning every tech on this forum, that I work with & know a bad name.

As far as your brothers car, it would just be a wild guess at this point with the limited info available. Damaged a caliper piston & it stuck? Didn't lube the slides? Wrong parts? There is a whole host of things that could've cause those brks to fail rather quickly. I'm fairly certain there must of been something that went wrong with the brk job or he wouldn't have just pulled over & put himself in a position to be "ripped off".

You guys are probably right. I kept out of it. Maybe it will all work out fine. My brother gives me a different story every time he tells it. He's not smart, but he's my brother and I don't want him to get taken and I feel some responsibility for that since I helped with part of it.
