Help reset EGR monitor Sign In

1997 Monte Carlo
3.1 131K

Got codes P0401 and P0420 a little while back. Replaced EGR and cleared codes. P0420 remained, and long story short I just replaced the cat this week. I need an emissions test. Have a scan tool and I am waiting for all the monitors to reset so I can go test it.

After following the GM drive cycle the best I could, all applicable monitors became ready except the EGR monitor. Cleaned out the carbon from the throttle body and EGR port as well now to see if that was the problem. Drove another cycle the best I could, but still no luck.

Any suggestions as to how to get the monitor ready or what could still be wrong? Thanks!

There are no codes popping up, right? That includes pending codes too.

Is this the drive cycle you attempted to follow?

Correct, no more codes now. And yes, that is the cycle I tried my best to follow. Live in Chicago, not the easiest to coast that long without breaking.

Is it possible a problem could cause the monitor to not be ready, or should this be resetting and then throwing a code if something was wrong?

Re: Help reset EGR monitor Sign In

You really have to stick to the drive cycle. You may have to take it out on some long straight country road. Sometimes some tests won't run if there is something holding them up. If the coolant temperature is too low, some tests won't run. If one test has failed even though it is ready, it could make another test not run. You really have to take a look at the mode $06 data and see what is going on in there to see what is holding up the EGR test.
