I have a 1999 Mazda 626 2.0 with >120k miles. I bought the car about 1 year ago. I've had problems with the way the car idles as of lately. It idles up to 5-6 rpm when I first take off or speeding back up anywhere from 0-40mph. I just had the idle control valve replaced, thinking that would solve the problem. The first few days, it did GREAT. It definitely had more power, but after about 1 week, it began to do the same thing before replacing the valve. I am truly at my wit's end with this card. I believe in my heart I was sold someone else's problem. My dad has done everything for this car, he knows to do!!!! Somebody Please, Please help me!!!! #Prettydamselindistress

You believe after a year this is someone else's problem on a 13 year old car?! IAC seemed to help so go back and see if that is done right and integrity of air intake items as it seems unmetered air like a vacuum leak is getting in. Should be setting code(s) to help if nothing visually seen, T

I just had the idle control valve replaced, thinking that would solve the problem. The first few days, it did GREAT. It definitely had more power You replaced a part that simply controls idle speed and you think it gave you more power? Don't bet on that.
I believe in my heart I was sold someone else's problem. Yes, that's what comes with a used car.
My dad has done everything for this car, he knows to do!!!! Then it sounds like it's time to bring it to a professional.
#Prettydamselindistress I guess that would be in the eye of the beholder ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I've always worked on my own vehicles but am no mechanic. I had a similar problem about 12 years ago with my wife's car. It was a Pontiac Sunbird so probably completely different than your Mazda. It idled high. I replaced the idle control valve, fixed it for a few days, and then happened again. I finally broke down and took it to a shop. They called me later that day and said it was fixed. When I got there I asked them what the problem was. They said the idle control valve. I told them I had tried that and the problem came back. After a few days the problem came back once again. I took it back to the shop and it ended up being the main computer in the car. I'm not saying your car has the same problem is. What I'm saying is that if you don't know what you're doing you sometimes have to break down and take it to someone who does. I feel like I know a little bit about working on my own cars, but if I can't figure it out, I know it ends up being cheaper to pay someone to fix it who knows what they're doing compared to throwing parts at it. I know my local dealership charges $45 to diagnose a problem. Why don't you take it to a shop in order to find out what the problem is. Once you find out what the problem is maybe you can then have your dad fix it to save some cash as long as it's something he feels comfortable doing.

It's crazy the cost difference in different parts of the country. I'm not sure if you remember, but when I bought the Sierra a few months ago, it had the chirp and clunk at takeoff and when stopping. I took it there to see if they could diagnose it. So, that $45 price is up to date. That was the first time I've been to a dealership for a diagnosis and honestly expected to pay a lot more than that. I thought that price was very reasonable. I bet they do that hoping you go ahead and allow them to fix the problem while you're there. That's probably where they make their money back. Kind of a way to get you in their door. I live about two and a half hours south of Chicago so I'm sure it's much cheaper down here compared to up there.

I'm up here....Chicago We average about $125.00 to $145.00 Hr I think they may have only charged you a 1/2 diagnosis for the $45.00 They're probably at $90.00 an hour... Not all diagnosis at a dealer is a min hour charge Some jobs ,its just a 1/2 hour min. If they are at $45.00 hr,i know a lot of Chicagoans who will make that drive south EDIT: Forgot to add, The sun was shining here today too,'Cept, it was in the low 40's and the HAWK was blowing in off the Lake Wouldn't have it any other way!

Boston - That's parking rates! I don't know of a single place in exactly Boston that touches cars except to tow them out - all leave city proper and close is $120+ then lower as you get away. All is location pricing, the techs don't make more, T
