Gunk in the air intake Sign In

Hey guys. I've been messing around with my car fixing up a few things and saw this when I pulled in intake tube off (pre-filter). Any idea what this crap is? I'm pretty sure I saw the same kind of stuff around where you add oil to the crankcase. Radioactive sludge?

That looks like water mixing with the oil.

What type of car are we talking about here?

89 Plymouth Reliant.

I also noticed that the hose that connects the air intake piece in the front of the car to this area had no hose clamps and was pretty loose. The hose that comes out the bottom of the air filter assembly (you can see it right below the "gunked" opening) also didn't have a clamp and was disconnected. ;o(

I bought some clamps to remedy this. Contributing factor?

I wonder if I should get a new oil cap. That is where i saw a little bit of this the first time.

Hmmm I guess I didn't scroll down far enough to see the 2nd pic or I would've known we were talking about a Chry 2.5L 4 cyl.

Those hoses on the housing are just air inlets & preheat hoses neither require clamps since they are all pre-filter.

If you are getting the same sludge in your crankcase, you really need to be looking at the head gasket/head. You are getting water mixing with the oil & that's not good.

I assume you are using coolant?

Yup using coolant. Its only a tiny bit of gunk near the oil cap. From what your telling me I'm just assuming that some water or coolant got spalshed up there. I don't think any is actually IN the oil. Its not like the oil comes out looking funny when I change it. It looks perfectly normal.
