Grinding noise when i start my 2003 Renault Megane 1.6 16v

My 2003 Renault Megane 1.6 16v makes a grinding noise when starting. When the car has not been driven for a few hours, it makes this noise, and i have to give the car some gas in order to get the engine going properly. If i do not do this then the engine cuts out.
The problem does not happen when the car is parked on a steep hill, facing upwards, leaning to the right.
This has occured for about a year, but used to only happen rarely, but now almost every time the car is started from cold.
Once the car is started, i can turn it off, then start it up again without this noise occuring.
Any ideas would be gratefully received!
