Hi all,

Mk3 Golf cl 1.6 (1997)
Manual gearbox/5 speed

Engine Code AEE

I bought the car in April, and at the beginning it was drivable although at idle the revs would bounce up and down a bit and when driving their was a slight kangarooing. Occasionally when accelerating quickly their would be a sudden loss of power which felt almost like putting the brakes on then after a few seconds of lifting off the throttle the power would come back (very sketchy to drive on motorways). The idling has progressively gotten worse to the point where it is not idling at all and without throttle it stalls. And finally today the engine lost power on the carriageway and that was it, it never started again. At the moment I am charging the battery whilst taking off the throttle body for a clean up and inspection. What could the problem be ?, my gut feeling says fuel pump, tps (if it has one), or possibly coil... or something along those lines. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

For a no start you'll have to test for spark using a spark tester, fuel pressure using a fuel pressure gauge, and injector activity using a noid light or labscope to see what is missing and which direction to take in your diagnosis.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

cleaned the throttle body and inspected fuel rail, fuel pressure reg, maf sensor, air box. replaced the coil, checked fuses. will test for compression and spark, then test relays, but will have to get somebody to come and do the fuel pressure test. will report back by the weekend. fingers crossed!
