Gear shift makes clicking noise when I brake while car is in DRIVE. Sign In

I have a 2005 Pontiac pursuit; automatic; 150000 kms.

My gear shift has always made the click noise when I brake while in Park -
like when I am moving from Park to Drive/Reverse. It no longer clicks when I am in reverse, but it clicks every time I brake or let off the brake while my car is in Drive. I will be driving down the road and as soon as I brake (even slightly), the shifter clicks.

The click noise does not come from the brake. It comes from the area of the shifter - the solenoid or interlock system or something.

I have read other forums and they seem to say it is fine - but I think other
people are complaining that it clicks when it is in Park. Mine does it while
driving.

I have taken it to the shop, but he said he doesn't know what the problem is. Is this a sign that it is about to fail?

The noise is the shift interlock solenoid engaging.

If you are able to shift in and out of Park easily when the brake is applied, then everything is working just as it is supposed to,

Thank you very much for your repsonse! So it is normal for the solenoid to engage while the vehicle is in drive? I thought the solenoid should recognize that the car is in drive and not trigger the interlock.

I just don't understand how that is normal when the car is 12 years old and just started doing it last week.

It may have recently got worn and loud but it has always worked that way.
