Gasoline Smell '05 Impala Login - Sign Up

Greetings All,
I have a 2005 Chevy Impala with a 3.4 engine (I believe lol ) It has recently developed a gasoline smell as of 11/5. I initially thought it was just me but this morning my wife took the car to work and called me and said the smell was stronger to the point she got a headache!. Any idea where I should start looking? Fuel line? fuel pump? all of the above?

Thanks,
Joe

hello, there first question does the car still run ok? if so check for any fuel leak underhood as well as undercar.. next you can check the vent for the evap system.

Joe; As I'm sure you are very aware, a raw fuel smell is not something to ignore. As the other poster stated, check very thouroughly for any fuel leaks in the engine compartment. It's rare, especially on that new of a vehicle, but injectors, fuel pressure regulator, connections, ect. can leak. Could be something simple as an EVAP problem, but you don't want to take any 'chances'. If you have towing insurance, I'd recommend, that for safety reasons, you have the vehicle towed to a repair shop. The 'air intake' for the cabin is right in front of the windshield, so if you are getting the fuel smell in the cabin, the problem is more than likely to be under the hood. You have 40-50K volts of electricity going through the spark plug wires and engine temperatures well over 250F under the hood, not to mention 500-600F at the exhaust manifolds....So, please, take this very seriously.

Greetings Folks,
I appreciate the replies very much. I had the car towed my my friend @ work and we found the leak! It was indeed the fuel regulator. I replaced it and all is good. Again I appreciate the replies and advice.

Joe; Thanks for letting us know how it went. If you had taken out a large insurance policy on your wife, we'd have been watching more closely. Glad to hear you got 'er fixed. (not the wife).Wink
