Gas pedal unresponsive first few seconds in the morning/ Hyundai Elantra 2002 Sign In

Hi,
I have a Hyundai Elantra 2002. For the past few weeks, I have been having this problem:

1. The gas pedal is unresponsive when I start the car, after parking overnight or after not using it for about 4-5hours. This happens only after such a gap between using the car. When I floor the pedal, it would do nothing for about 3-5 seconds, but it will be fine after that. I have no issues during the drive.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You shouldn't need to touch the gas pedal at all. Playing with it just confuses the car unless you think you are flooding in which case held to floor should help clear that.

Does it seem like lack of fuel or too much or something else? We can suggest ways to narrow down why it has this behaviour when we know a bit more. Fuel pressure reading WHEN it does this would help,

Hi, Thanks. It just lasts for 3-5 seconds. No pressure build up on the gas pedal at all. I try to start slowly, but when nothing happens I floor it. When I do, within 3-5 seconds, the engine revs up normally and then I release before it revs up too much.

It does feel like lack of fuel during that time, but that is not an issue, as I observed this even when my tank is full.

Thanks.

You aren't supposed to have to touch the gas pedal at all for starting. What do you mean "No pressure build up on the gas pedal?"

Flooring it shut the fuel off.

It doesn't matter if you have 1/4 or a Full tank of gas but could matter if you are close to empty which isn't good for a fuel pump anyway and to be avoided.

This probably could just use a professional injector cleaning and throttle body cleaning and any tune-up items including fuel filter that are late or in need.

Is this a case where it won't start at all if you don't play with the gas pedal?

Thanks. I meant "start pushing down the pedal slowly".

Re: Gas pedal unresponsive first few seconds in the morning/ Hyundai Elantra 2002 Sign In

OK: In that it runs just fine after this first start it's suggesting to me either low fuel pressure which must be caught in the act and I still would clean up intake items - IAC (idle air control) and the throttle body. It also would plain help to get the professional injection cleaning job. Ask around who has the equipment to do that. Just plain putting stuff in the gas isn't the same and don't expect any miracles in a can.

The periodic use of injector care products can help prevent but are lousy at a cure. I do suggest periodic use of by brand Chevron's Techron but you don't have to go nuts - just some now and then. Fuel quality really stinks where I am for some reason (state mandated additives) that I swear cause more problems than any good.

In the absence of any codes (check that too) I think that's all you'll need. Can only do educated guessing so far. None of the mentioned would hurt and only help.

There's an outside chance of a coolant temp sensor sending a signal that the car is always warm even when not but I don't hear of that much on these cars. It would probably be best to leave the car overnite as the pro cleaning is not DIY and if the tech get the car cold he/she may notice more or something else altogether.

Unless another here has any suggestions that's all I can think of for now,

T
