Gas Mileage Sign In

I recently bought a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT from a mechanic who had replaced the '97 engine (thru a rod) with a 2002 Grand Am 3.4 liter with 20,000 miles. Everything appears to be just fine except for the mileage - I get only about 13 MPG (city)! Since the car has new plugs and wires, I really don't know what to do other than have it tuned-up a a garage. However, since garages are very expensive and do not want to be "taken for a ride", I decided to ask for advice. Can anyone help?

Re: Gas Mileage Sign In

There are a lot of factors that could cause poor fuel mileage that it’s going to hard to tell you what route to go in.
Yes a basic tune-up will never hurt but because this is a replacement engine from a newer vehicle, I would be concerned with sensor inputs. I’ve seen this many times when a salvaged engine goes into a vehicle; all the sensors look the same externally, plug in to the wiring harness, will not turn on a check engine light but are not the proper sensor electrically. Close only works for horseshoes and hand grenades. LOL
If this were my vehicle I would have someone scan the computer, not so much for codes but for sensor inputs.(Codes are not the be all, end all, for diagnostics) That’s to make sure that all the sensors were in fact sending out “normal” signals and to make sure the computer is capable interpreting the signals properly.
Don’t bother running into one of those places that’ll “scan” your computer for free and tell you what code(s) you may or may not have.
Like I said you need someone that can interpret scan data; yes that’ll cost you a little money for an experienced technician to do this but hopefully with that experience he’ll/ she’ll be able to see something that doesn’t jive and cause this problem.

Re: Gas Mileage Sign In

Dan,
Thank you very much for the information. Guess I'll just have to find an experienced technician to scan the computer for sensor input codes.
Again, your help is appreciated.
Alan
