Fuel Guage On Empty While Running Sign In

Hello all- this is my first post.

I have a 1990 Full Size Bronco, 5.8L 351W, E40D Trans. About 220,000 miles.

When the ignition is turned on, the fuel guage reads empty, regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank.

When I turn the ignition off, however, the fuel guage needle slowly creeps over to rest at what I believe is about the correct fuel level.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? I have not put a voltmeter on anything yet, and have not bother dropping the tank yet. I'd like to get some opinions before I proceed.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm? For now I'm not so concerned where it reads when everything is off. It could be sender, gauge in dash or a break along the way wire or connection. Don't hold me to it, but I believe it you ground it at the tank connection as a test (use an incandescent test light for ground thru the bulb) you will change the reading but only do that for a couple seconds as it may hurt some.

It believe grounded will read full and if not it's inconclusive if so it suggests the sender.

For now use your trip odometer from known full as a gauge. You should have an idea how far it goes before needing fuel. I'm in that habit for everything with a trip odometer with working gauge as you never know when it could fail,
