Found a little dirty sponge near my air filter

Hello dere! I changed the air filter in my 95 Ford Escort today and noticed there is a little sponge on the side that is very dirty. I cleaned up the puddle of oil underneath it and took it out to dust it off but I'm not sure how to clean and re-oil it. I googled but found most posts are for motorcycles. Does anyone have advice for how to clean or replace it? It's looking pretty brittle. First post, many thanks if you have any thoughts! Daisy

That's not supposed to be oiled on purpose. It's there to prevent the oil from the crankcase fumes from being sucked into the intake. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yeah, wash it out if you can without destroying it.

Good idea, mine is really crumbling. Thanks for the tip! All the oil changes I've had and no one has touched that little sponge -- I wonder why.
