Hello, all!

I'm new to this forum (and am a bit clueless when it comes to cars), so go easy on me!

I rented a Ford Fusion 2013 (SE) from Enterprise today. The car had only 9,600ish miles on it, which wasn't bad. It seems to be a pretty nice car, with the exception of two things:

a) The steering wheel seems a bit "loose" - not too bad at all compared to Nissan, but there definitely doesn't seem to be a "tight" feel with the car. Is this normal?

b) The gas seems to be draining VERY quickly. There's an indicator on the dashboard telling you how long until E, and the car began today as 480 miles to E. Driving only literally five minutes home (about 10 miles) rapidly got the indicator down to 461. When doing another 5 minute-drive around the block, a rapid downgrade to 439 miles remaining. The gauge also had the "finger" move down a bit from full. The guy at Enterprise filled it up right before I left, so this doesn't make sense.

I talked my dad, who is an auto body mechanical (for mostly Subaru's, though) and he said this was normal. I don't know, I rented a Ford Focus earlier this year and the gauge was very reasonable and didn't go down as fast as mine did today, even in local/city traffic. Literally JUST pulling out of my driveway into the street had the gas mileage remaining pop down about 3 numbers (from 460 to 457, I believe), and I have a short driveway!

I'm going out of my mind. Normally, I would just exchange the car at the rental agency, but it's a small agency and limited in cars, and I paid an upgrade fee to upgrade to this car, so... I'm seriously unsure of what to do and if this is normal.

For what it's worth, I was told my car was a FWD, which has a higher gas mileage than a AWD, but it doesn't say anywhere that it's a FWD... only a Ford Fusion SE 2013. So, I'm a bit unsure.

Any help or answers would be MUCH appreciated! I'm taking a long trip tomorrow and need to know what I should do/what the issue could be/if it's just me going out of my head

Many thanks!

Andrew

You are right and no offense intended that you are clueless. It's calculating DTE, or "distance to empty" based on the average of what it has experienced since reset or filled.

If you just let one of those idle long enough sitting still you are averaging in ZERO and it knows that. If worried with a rental go get another. Comparing feel of one car to another is about pointless too,
