Hi folks. New poster here. I have a 1995 ford explorer 4x4 with V6 engine and about 175,000 miles on it. I do most of my own maintenance. The car has been in the garage up at my cabin for the last 6 months with minimal use. Picked it up and brought it down to CA central valley. Outside temp on the way home was about 9'F. Fluid level in radiator is OK. When I put the defrost on with cab temp on hot, engine temperature would start climbing to the top of the right, even when on flat ground. As soon as I turned off the defrost, engine temp ran normal. I cycled the defrost about 6 times, everytime if defrost or cab heater was "on" engine temp gauge started to climb and would approach overheating reading on gauge. This seems like an enigma to me and I am clueless as to what the cause could be. Any thoughts? Thanks Bill

Even though you said the radiator was full it seems as though your low on coolant when you filled the radiator up did you have the heater control valve opened- I'm just a do-it-yourselfer but seeing that no one answered you I just thought i would throw in my two cents

It doesn't have a heater control valve. The reason defrost makes it run hotter is because it engages the A/C compressor which adds load to the engine. It has an underlying overheating problem that needs to be found. It may have some air in the cooling system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

There is TSB for such a similar issue.
