Ford Econoline Braking Problem Sign In

2001 Econoline xlt van....95K miles...steering wheel vibrates slightly when I apply the brakes and at times seems to 'pulsate' while braking as if ABS is being activated. Brake pads 35K old may be worn but no metal-to-metal sound. Did have one ball joint and tie rod replaced at 65K. Still on first set of tires - most highway driven.

Re: Ford Econoline Braking Problem Sign In

If you step on the brake and you feel you could mix a cocktail on the dashboard, the rotors are warped. Never have a rotor machined, it only makes them thinner and they warp again twice as fast. Replace front pads and rotors. Make sure you adjust the rear brakes so the fronts aren't doing all the work. If the rear brakes aren't adjusted properly, the fronts do more than they should, the rotors overheat, warp, and you have another brake pulse.

The brake rotors likely need to be machined or replaced; due to rust deterioration or warpage.

The days of making rotors and drums thick enough to machine them seems gone. They feel fine right away but come back way to quickly with warpage, T

Thanks Steve.....but the rotors are fairly new. Had them both replaced at 65K miles along with a new ball joint and tie rod and front pads. The miles ( 95K ) are almost ALL highway!
