Fitting a new timing belt to Astra Y17DT (Cam/toothed/timing) Sign In

Hello bods,

I'm planning to fit a new timing belt in my car and I've never done it before so want to know exactly what I'm getting myself into. My base reference is a Haynes manual...

I will be buying a timing belt kit. My questions are:

What are all the pieces in the kit for?? I was expecting just to have to change the belt.
The instructions talk about 'Install TDC fixing bolts in camshaft pulley and injection pump drive gear'.... what are 'TDC fixing bolts'??.... will I get them in the kit??
The manual mentions about tightening things to the specified torque... surely it's enough to tighten it to a common sense level without getting special tools to measure torque (or am I risking blowing up the car??)
Any other 'heads up' advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time and expertise,

Honestly, lose the Haynes manual and get one from Mitchell or Alldata. Your local library may have them. Haynes and Chilton never have impressed me. I have had more bad diagrams and bad procedures in them.
The TDC fixing bolts basically hold the gear in place while you install the belt. If you are that unsure of what to do to replace the belt you may want to bring it to a shop. If this is an interference engine and you put the belt on wrong, you could end up costing yourself $1500 or more to fix the valves. Just my opinion.

Steve
