Engine revving ON ITS OWN (idle mode), when.... Sign In

Hello:

99 Chevy Cavilier. Have heard over the last few months that the fan was grinding a bit but not a lot. Just yesterday it seemed fine, including AC working (Mid 90s if heat has anything to do with it.)

I went to get in the car less than 4 hours after I'd last driven it, and the AC no longer worked *and* when the AC/fan is turned on the engine is revving as if someone is hitting the gas. I had thought it was two separate issues (broken ac and revving) but I just realized it's only happening when the fan/ac is on.

Has anyone ever heard of this? We are very low income and need to know what we are looking at. Is it safe to drive the car as long as the fan isn't on?

Thank you
Kari B

Is the check engine light coming on?

It's been on, for a long time, due to the Catyletic <sp> Converter getting bad. So if it's on because of this *too*, I wouldn't know? I'm going to take it to a local Auto Zone and get it checked free if it'll run ok to go.

Another friend suggested the condenser?

Yes, that's the problem with ignoring a known issue. Now you don't get notified when something else happens. Check the codes. I'm suspecting you mmay find a temp sensor code. If the sensor is unplugged or open circuit, it will make the fan run full time and tell the computer that it's -40 degrees so it rich-ens the mixture and raises the idle speed.
