Engine revs but van moves slowly. Only when cold. Sign In

97 Chevy Astro. Auto transmission. 160k miles.

Whenever the van has been sitting for awhile or when it has been cold outside the van has a hard time accelerating after starting. The engine will rev high but the van will hardly move anywhere. This happens in every gear. This only lasts until the engine warms up. Once it is warm the engine accelerates fine and the transmission shifts with no problems. There was a CEL relating to low circuit input from the MAF sensor but I cleaned it, erased the code, and drove it about 300 miles and it hasn't come back.

The transmission fluid looks to be a little low but doesn't look or smell bad at all. It was last changed about 60k miles ago.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the engine is revving, but the vehicle isn't moving, the transmission is slipping. Be sure the fluid level is correct. If it is, and you still have slipping going on, you need to take it in to have the transmission checked out. Could have worn or hard seals causing loss of fluid apply pressure when cold. The slippage is probably smoking your clutches and/or bands.
