Engine Temp Gauge/ Engine won't heat up Sign In

1998 Ford Explorer XLT 110,000miles

Im trying to figure out why the engine wont heat up, the gauge does move up a little after driving for a few mins but it will never get above the cold white line. The Truck has a clutch fan that might not be working right, but it doesn't get any loud when driving. Any thoughts on/if anything is wrong or what I should check. I was thinking of replacing the Temp Sender but sense the gauge does move (from very cold to cold) I thought it might not be that. (I have checked the gauge and it is working)

You can't be guessing. you have to use a laser thermometer to determine the actual temp at the thermostat and if it is too cold, replace the thermostat.

Do you think I should just change the thermostat it could be stuck open? Might be cheaper then taking it to someone.

If you're determined to throw parts at it blindly, go right ahead. It can get expensive though.

This would really suck to install a lot of parts & then find out that the problem is with the gauge itself.........

Thx Hammer, ill look into the laser thermometer, was thinking of trowing parts at it Tongue. Ive grounded out the gauge and that seems to be working right.

Right....but if the temp sensor is skewed....the gauge won't show an accurate reading....

The easiest thing to do would be to hook up a scan tool and look at the datastream and see what the coolant temp is off the ECT sensor.....If the reading is normal, then you have a sensor/wiring problem with the gauge......If it shows too cold as well then it would be time to go down that road....

Befor I posted here I bought a new sensor and I snapped the plastic top of it off when putting it in Pirate I couldn't get the wrench in there and used a sock wrench, but ya that was my first thought The Sensor is messed up. So I thought id come here befor trying again. Think I got some good info I just dont have the Scan tool or laser thermometer. I would think it has to be the sensor or thermostat. Appreciate the help I was getting frustrated

Do you have good heat from the heater?

Re: Engine Temp Gauge/ Engine won't heat up Sign In

Thats a good question I do have a leak in the Heater Control Valve that only leaks when I turn on the heat, I get ok heat but not what it should be, and I didnt really use heat this winter to much because of the leak. That could be it?

I didnt think that would affect the engine if it wasn't leaking when not running heat but maybe it does, it needs to be replaced anyway so thats where ill start, I think.
