Electronic dash won't work (to Dan)

Electronic dash won't work (to Dan)

I hope Dan gets this. The dash only shows the check engine light, the IBS brake light, The seat belt light and thats it not even the gear light comes on. the rest of the dash does not light. It is black. Does the dash connect to the computer in order to work. We did not try the 5amp fuse yet but that is something we did not know. When we changed the dash out only the same light that I desribed above are showing the rest is completley black also so we are thinking it may be the computer but not sure if it connects or has anything to do with the computer.I hope you can help. Thanks

The instrument cluster is it’s own Module (computer) and the only direct connection it has with the ECM (electronic control module) (computer) is the Check engine light. It does share information with the ECM for some of the inputs but if the Blazer is running ok that won’t be your problem. The ways it sounds to me is; you’ve lost one of the power feeds or grounds to the cluster.
Here’s a wiring diagram for what I’m hoping is your instrument cluster; this one is a bit confusing because it shows all three different styles of clusters available in this year of S truck.
I’ve marked the feeds and grounds for the one that is the most common digital cluster. You’ll notice that the two marked ignition; you’ll have to turn the ignition to the run position and have the parking lights turned on to send power too the cluster.
So confirm that you have power and ground making it too and through the cluster connector.
Use a test light clipped to a known good ground to test for the power feeds; do the same for the grounds changing the test light clip to a power source like the battery positive terminal.
Try and test these with the cluster connected to the wiring harness as well, if the problem is a bad connection it may need load on the circuit to go open. Another reason for using a test light is that it also needs a good connection to light the bulb in the test light. A voltmeter will still show voltage even if there is only one strand of wire still connected but that’s not enough to run the cluster.
