Noises problem
2004 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 100000 miles

My vehicle makes loud noises only when the fan is cut on. I have been told by a repair shop that they I need the ac compressor replaced and all of the work will cost $1100. I am wondering if it could possibly be only the ac compressor clutch that needs replacing and not the entire compressor. Something seems odd about a 1100 repair for just loud noises when the fan is cut on?

No, it won't. Even when the clutch fails, it usually either takes the compressor with it or was caused by a bad compressor in the first place.

I can hear the rattling in the compressor when I engage the fan, to overhaul the system I know I will have to have a shop discharge the system before working on it, but what all has to be replaced besides flushing the lines with solvent? compressor, condenser, orifice or valves, receiver/drier? I know there is an evaporator in the system, but i am unsure if all of this needs to be replaced with the compressor?

It's pretty hard for me to advise you on that stuff. Much of that has to be determined by the tech doing the job by recognizing what kind of failure it was, what type of condenser it has in it and how much debri may have been sent through the system. This my sound like a simple undertaking but it's really not. Not recognizing a potential problem could make the new compressor fail in the near future. At minimum it needs a compressor and drier and possibly a condenser and expansion valve.
