Thanks for your past help. Did I exhaust your patience?
Well Hammer Time, I desperately need your help in trying to set the distributor correctly in the '89 Cadi 4.5L 273. I had a mechanic who came to change the pick-up coil and when he removed the distributor shaft he did not bring the dist. to TDC nor did he make any marks to denote the exact placement of the distributor. So the car's timing has been off ever since. So what I am trying to do is restore the car's timing to 10 degrees BTDC. I take the cap off the dist. unplug the electrical connection and put the car in nuetral in order to bring it to TDC. I remove the #1 spark plug and because it's such a tight fit I screw in a compression hose and stuff balled up tissue in the end in order to see when it pops out while I bump the engine. I bump the engine a few times, usually 3-4, the tissue comes flying out and the rotor is pointing at or near number one while the timing mark is near 0 or a smidge past 0. Sometimes this happens and the timing mark is near or past 20.
If I leave it at TDC and hook everything back up the car starts but is not running the way prior to the pick up coil going out. I assume it's timing so when I time it to 10 degrees BTDC it runs better but kinda "HIGH". Go to start the car w/it at 10 BTDC and it doesn't wanna start. I've read that it is better to set it at what the car needs to be timed at rather than 0. What does it mean "The timing is too far advanced"? Could this be my problem? Another thing: If the compression stroke and exhaust stroke are both up strokes and both are expelling fuel/air from the cylinder, how can I tell the difference between the two? If the timing mark pasts 0 when attempting this is it ok to manaully move the crankshaft counter-clockwise to get it at exactly 0?
How can I get this thing right Hammer Time?

If your trying to time this thing without the engine running, that is not going to happen. Those instructions were to get it close enough to get it to start and you use a timing light after that.
